Brett Byram, PhD

Brett is the BEAM Lab's director. Brett graduated with a PhD from Duke in 2011, and a Bachelors degree from Vanderbilt in 2004. He's spent time in Mountain View, California working at Siemens' Ultrasound Business Unit, and he spent a year working with Jorgen Jensen's Center for Fast Ultrasound in Lyngby, Denmark. Brett served as an Assistant Research Professor at Duke University from 2012-2013. He joined the Vanderbilt Faculty in 2013.  Brett is part of the Vanderbilt Institute in Surgery and Engineering (VISE), and is an affiliate of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS). He is the faculty director of ACCRE--Vanderbilt's high performance compute and research IT center.


Siegfried Schlunk

Siegfried Picture

Siegfried is a post-doc in the BEAM Lab. He grew up around Nashville, Tennessee, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2016 with a BE in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics and with the PhD in 2022. He is currently researching methods for improving medical ultrasound image quality in cardiac applications. He is also interested in novel solutions to image quality assessment.


Abbie Weeks

Abbie Picture

Abbie is a graduate student in the BEAM Lab. She is originally from Moultrie, Georgia. Abbie graduated from Mercer University with a BSE in Biomedical Engineering in 2018. As an undergraduate, Abbie interned in the Biomedical Imaging Resource at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN performing MRI processing. Her current research interests focus on Ultrasound Imaging, particularly perfusion and elasticity imaging.


Emelina Vienneau

Emelina is a graduate student in the BEAM Lab. She is from North Carolina and earned her BSE in Biomedical Engineering from Duke University in 2018. She is working on applying novel image processing and machine learning techniques to enable functional transcranial ultrasound.



Chris Khan

Chris Picture

Chris is a graduate student in the BEAM lab. He was born and raised in the Nashville, Tennessee area, and he graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2018 with a BE in Biomedical Engineering and a minor in Scientific Computing. His current research focuses on developing real-time implementations of ultrasound beamforming techniques.



Preston Pan

Preston Picture

Preston is a graduate student in the BEAM lab. He was born and raised in Taiwan and graduated from the University of Washington with a BS in Biomedical Engineering in 2019. His research focuses on deep neural network beamformers that leverage synthetic training data to achieve in vivo image quality improvement.



Taryn Dunigan

Taryn Picture

Taryn is an MSTP student in the BEAM lab. She is originally from Long Island, NY. She earned her BE in Biomedical Engineering in 2017 and her MS in Biomedical Sciences in 2020 from Vanderbilt University. Her current research focuses on ultrasound imaging of perfusion.
